Dear reader,

Only a very few weeks are separating us from KLIMAX GOLDFINGER III, Belgium’s biggest international climbing event, scheduled on Saturday April 20th, 2002. The team is ready to welcome all the climbers (over 12 different nationalities) and of course also the audience. There is still space left in the theatre so don’t hesitate to book your tickets now! Enjoy the competition!

This month’s issue brings you the complete list of international climbers that have confirmed their presence so far, introduces our sponsors, updates you on the new UIAA regulations and much more.

Participating Climbers

Following international climbers have confirmed their presence up to now (status 2nd April 2002). The organization is very happy to welcome about 13 newcomers to Goldfinger III, this means that some the missing top15 male and female climbers of last years edition will all be present in Belgium this time. The KLIMAX GOLDFINGER competition is traditionally the first international contest on the climbers calendar, the week after Goldfinger the first Worldcup competition will be held in Bolzano (Italy) and most climbers take of to Italy from here. It is very likely that in the next few days some international climbers will be added.

Some background information about the international climbers (a selection):

Chabot Alexandre: Best climber on the continuously updated world ranking. Last year his foot slipped off a hold and therefore he missed the podium, but we’re sure that this will not happen again to him this year. He’s coming back to take the gold medal now!

Bosma Peter: Strongest Scandinavian climber that started climbing already at the age of 8 years, currently the number 14 on the continuous updated world ranking. His results were gradually improving during last years competition season and we hope that he continuous like this on Goldfinger.

Evgeny Krivocheicev: Evgeny is one of the most polyvalent competition climbers there are today, participating in following 3 disciplines: Difficulty, Speedclimbling and Ice Climbing. He surprised everyone during last winter season by winning the World Championship Ice Climbing in Pitztal 2002 by being able to jump over 3 meters from one ice wall to another with his ice axes and crampons and so reaching the top of the finals. Learn more about him on his website www.wallsandfalls.com. Evgeny will be one of the instructors for the special youth training the day after the competition.

Serik Kazbekov: This is the tall climber that is appearing on our flyers and brochures. Good for the 2nd place on last years edition. He has one of the most esthetic climbing styles ever seen, climbing very relaxed making optimal usage of his strength and technique. His wife Natalia Perlova will be participating as well. She originally started with speed climbing (a race against the clock on routes 5c- 6a) and is gradually climbing on the world ranking difficulty climbing as well. Petrenko Maxim: This Ukrainian climber has a very special climbing style as he’s climbing very fast and thus saves some energy by doing so. Last year he came all the way down from Ukraine by bus and shared the last part of the trip with the Bindhammer brothers.

Cufar Martina: Martina won the first 2 editions of Goldfinger, will she take the 3rd victory as well? We’re sure that it will be a tough climb against Muriel Sarkany, our Belgian champion. Both of them are always on the podium during the international competitions but only one of them can take the highest stake. Martina will bring Natalia Gros along; this young Slovenian climber is only 18 years old and is already the number 8 on the world ranking.

Lavarda Jenny: With only 18 years old she won almost all youth climbing championships during the past 2 years. Last year she couldn’t make it because of the illness of her coach but this year she will take her father along.

Ovchinnikova Elena: By far one of the most experienced female climbers of this moment, she recently entered the second part of the thirties but still good for a place in the top five. She comes straight out of Las Vegas where she lives at the moment.

Ulla Walder: Haven’t we told you in our last newsletter that she stopped competition climbing? Well, she’s back, surprising as she always is Ulla would like to make her comeback on Goldfinger (where she decided to stop 2 years ago)! Meet her at the Party!

The Belgian Male Climbing Team:

Abraham Jérôme: Very strong climber that had to train for months with bricks and mortar in his house instead of on climbing walls, nevertheless it seems to be a quite efficient climbing scheme as he climbed up to the 2nd place on the Belgian Championship some weeks ago.

Favresse Nicolas : Clearly the best Belgian climber at this moment in time (Belgian Champion 2002) and was able to take the 6th place during last years edition, leaving many international climbers behind. He recently opened the toughest climbing pitch in Belgium, “Le Clou”, 8c in Freyr. Will he be able to reach the finals this year?

Favresse Olivier : Brother of Nicolas Favresse, in most of the climbs he’s the 2nd best just after his brother but the gap is decreasing….

Mus Johan: Talking about the most experienced male competition climber in Belgium? Well, here he is. Thanks to his strong come-back during the Belgian Championship, he will be able to climb again with his international friends. In the meanwhile he started a unique boulder climbing hall in Ghent called Fontainbleau, worthwhile paying a visit as it is a perfect copy of the real Fontainebleau in France.

Hanssens Stéphane : Competition climbing seems to be a family thing. Like the Bindhammer brothers and the Favresse brothers, he will participate together with his sister Nathalie.

Coenen Olivier: Founder of Belgian Rebolting Team (www.rebolting.be), that takes care of re- equipping the rocks in Belgium and making climbing safer. Nevertheless he still finds the time to train for competition climbing.

Onega Marius: In last year’s edition Marius was able to climb himself into the top10 thanks to his hard training work. During the recent boulder championships he proved to be still among the best….

And the Belgiam Female Climbing Team:

Sarkany Muriel: Muriel is since years the best Belgian climber, by far. She was the worlds best difficulty climber in the years 2001 and 1999 and still wins many international contests. If she doesn’t win then she usually takes the golden medal.

Anthony Kim: Best Belgian Female climber during the last Goldfinger. Last months competition results were not extremely well due to some injuries but as these are better now she might be back in shape just in time. Chloë Graftiaux: By far the most promising young climbing talent in Belgium. At the age of only 14 years old the Goldfinger team offers her the opportunity to participate for the first time in an international competition. We feel very confident that she will be able to make the semi-finals. Chloë’s sister Alix, 2nd in the Belgian Championship has been invited as well but couldn’t participate as she’s off on expedition to Nepal during the month of April to climb a 6000 meter mountain that hasn’t been climbed before.

Hanssens Nathalie: Sister of Stéphane Hanssens and part of an even bigger climbing family. Nathalie was 2nd at the Belgian Championship for juniors some weeks ago.

Leroy Vanessa: Winner of the Belgian Championship 2002 for juniors where she won from Nathalie Hanssens.
